The Steinman Institute For Civic Engagement
After gifting LNP|LancasterOnline to WITF, The Steinman Foundation provided seed funding to establish The Steinman Institute for Civic Engagement (TSI). TSI supports local journalism, professional development of journalists, and explores how media, education, and engagement can strengthen civic participation and sustainable news models.
Louder than Guns Initiative
The Steinman Foundation supported two events in Lancaster County that used music to spark conversation around gun culture, violence, and safety. In partnership with journalist David Greene and musician Ketch Secor, the events included the premiere of Louder Than Guns—a film inspired by a school shooting in Secor’s hometown—and a community discussion featuring students, mental health experts, and local leaders. Additional Foundation funding was awarded to local partners to expand efforts around gun safety, mental health, and civic dialogue.

The Steinman Institute for Civic Engagement
The Steinman Foundation’s bold early commitment of $1.5 million served as a powerful catalyst—unlocking more than $20 million in funding to develop The Apartments at College Avenue. This development brings much-needed affordable housing to Lancaster City for working families and individuals living with disabilities. We are deeply grateful for the Foundation’s forward-thinking leadership and flexibility, which also allowed HDC MidAtlantic to reinvest this grant into future phases. In total, this investment will help create over 160 affordable apartments—changing lives and strengthening our community for generations to come.

We are creating a community of practice for early career mental health professionals, helping recent graduates get the clinical supervision they need to become licensed therapists and counselors. This program builds a strong talent pipeline by removing financial barriers for first-generation college graduates and minority students, preventing burnout, creating community, and empowering early career clinicians to thrive in caring for our children and families. In turn, these new clinicians are better equipped to care for children and young adults and are more likely to remain in the mental health workforce long-term.
